In 1939, the Frisco West Springfield shops rebuilt SLSF 2-10-2 #56 into the impressive SLSF 4-8-2 #4404 in 1939. The loco was an oil burner suited for passenger service and lasted until bein sold for scrap in Octovber of 1952 when diesels took over the duties on the Firsco. .Specs - serial #49412, nee-SLSF 2-10-2 #56, 70" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 29x32" cylinders, engine weight of 449,760 lb, tractive effort of 68,600 lb. A chilling description of the accident was written on the back of the photo by photographer Arhur B. Johnson. "Frisco 4-8-2 #4404 pulling the "Bluebonnet' #8, Oct 5, 1947 about 4:30am running a little late in heavy fog. Engineer became lost due to fog and didn't know he was on the Nichols curve, which he hit at 60 or more, when it should have been 30 mph. Engine flipped, killing fireman. No passengers hurt. Engine rebuilt & returned to service Dec, 1947." |
