ALS 0-10-0 #14 - Alton & Southern |
Description: |
Although listed as a 0-10-2 configuration since there is no option for 0-10-0, the loco was the last 0-10-0 built by Baldwin. It was purchased for the Alton & Southern's by one of its most important customers, Alcoa, who used the line for mineral transports. Specs - class 14, 57" drivers, impressive 230 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine weight of 324,000 lb, impressive tractive effort of 80,669 lb. From the looks of the rails under the loco, the original negative was wavy when the print was made. No photographer, location or actual date given for the photo. |

DMIR 0-10-0 #93 |
Description: |
One of the rarest switchers is this Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Rwy built by Baldwin in December of 1927 as Duluth, Missabe & Northern #93 (serial #60294, class S6). The DMN #93 slid over to the DMIR roster in 1938 and 20 years later, this rare 0-10-0 switcher was scrapped. Unfortunately, the RRPA database doesn't even list a wheel configuration of 0-10-0 anywhere so no config or builder was selected. Specs - 57" drivers, impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine weight of 352,250 lb, impressive tractive effort of 77,600 lb, fitted with Franklin tender booster. The photo comes from the Howard Ameling collection. |

URR 304 |
Description: |
The Baldwin Locomotive Works built ten 0-10-2 steam locomotives for the Union Railroad, the only ten of this model ever constructed. Number 304 was built in 1936 and served its original owner until 1949 when the arrival of the diesel on the Union saw this locomotive sold to the DM&IR. Donated to the city of Greenville in 1985, the park side of the locomotive has been restored to its Union Railroad look. |

URR 0-10-2 #307 - Union Railroad |
Description: |
Odd but powerful 1936 Baldwin switcher built for the Union Railroad for heavy hauling. According to SteamLocomotives.com "This was an enormous design, quite suitable for the US Steel railroad on which it operated. Its unusual arrangement stemmed from the short Union turntables, need for high adhesive weight and power, and relatively short runs. The large firebox -- fitted with three thermic syphons (90 sq ft/8.35 sq m) and a combustion chamber (72 sq ft/6.7 sq m) -- needed a trailing axle and the short turntables and low operating speeds permitted dispensing with a lead truck. Even with the low speeds and relatively tall drivers, each driver set needed substantial counterbalancing. About the only undersized parts were the two 12" (305 mm) piston valves." Ivan W. Saunders photo |

Description: |
Originally built as a 2-10-2 for CStPM&O in 1917. When acquired by the C&NW there were frequent derailments on turnouts and was rebuilt at the Proviso Yard as a 0-10-2 in 1944. It was put into use as a heavy yard switcher. It was scrapped in 1949. (actual date and location of the photo unknown) |

St Clair Tunnel Co 0-10-0 #600 Camelback |
Description: |
Here is a true historical older photo reprint that came from the Burton Historical Collection. According to the info on the back, this unit was built by Baldwin in 1891. Wikipedia lists the St Clair Tunnel between Sarnia, Ontario and Port Huron, Michigan as the first full-size subaqueous railroad tunnel built in North America, 6,025 feet (1,836 m) from portal to portal. Steam was used until 1907 when the tunnel was electrified to reduce smoke emissions in the tunnel itself. Spedific from the back of the photo - 22x28 " cylinders, 165 pis boiler pressure, engine weight of 173,100 lb and a tractive force of 37,637 lb. Definitely an unusual locomotive to say the least! No exact date was given so an approximate one was used. A wheel configuration of 0-10-0 for Baldwin was not an option on this site so 0-10-2 was selected. "SCT" is not recognized as the reporting mark for this locomotive.. |

DMIR 0-10-2 #604 - Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range |
Description: |
Here is an example of the largest steam locomotive without a front truck ever built in the US. Built by Baldwin in June of 1936, it was intended for the Union RR as their #304. When the URR dieselized, it was sold to the DMIR to become their #604. In 1963, the loco was acquired by the Bessemer & Lake Erie. Eventually it was put on display in the Greenville Railroad Park. The photo is from the Howard W. Ameling collection. |

DMIR 604 |
Description: |
Displayed for all to see at the Greenville Railroad Park is one of the largest steam locomotives ever constructed without a leading truck. This 0-10-2 was operated by the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway from 1949 until 1963 when it was acquired by the Bessemer & Lake Erie. The street side of the locomotive has been restored to how it looked while on the DM&IR. |
